How TK Arts ‘became their own boss’

TK Arts offer a wide range of Circus, Drama and Street Theatre Workshops and Projects for children & young people. Created in January 2013 by Tom Kellett, a qualified youth and community worker, the company aims to provide these arts via a mixture of term-time classes, cross-curricular projects, lunch clubs, extended day and holiday activities.

Originally from Cardiff, Tom moved to Kent in December 2003 to work for Kent County Council as a Youth Arts Worker based at The Sittingbourne Community College. Redundancy in December 2012 prompted Tom to look at his options and TK Arts was born.

Tom Says “Following notice of my redundancy I saw a Swale Borough Council poster advertising ‘Free Business Support’ so I got in touch. The team at Swale then put me in touch with Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce for a consultation with one of their Business Advisers.

They were able to give me lots of help and advice on issues such as tax, NI and legal frameworks as well as lots of ideas on marketing, publicity and website creation.

This free business support was invaluable in helping to establish TK Arts. I’m so proud to be able to say that I am my own boss”.
